CHEESE TRAVELS: Rolling Cheese, Helsinki
As one of the planet’s top cheesemaking nations, Britain is fast influencing global curd culture. Here, we take a look at what British cheeses and cheese people are getting up to around the world. This month, we’re at Rolling Cheese in Helsinki, Finland.
Located along the historic Museokatu in the Etu-Töölö district of Helsinki, Rolling Cheese stands alone as the only bricks-and-mortar cheese shop in Finland. Founded by Finnish-British couple, Nelli and Peter Steer, in 2021 when they moved to Finland from the UK, the shop specialises in traditional, artisan cheese from the UK, France, and Italy, and also includes a small cheese and wine bar.
“At Rolling Cheese, we like to say “have a nice time” — and we mean it”, says Nelli. “It’s not just a motto for our customers, it’s how we approach cheese itself. Cheese should bring joy, start conversations, and remind us where we come from. It’s living food with roots, stories, and soul — and British cheese plays a vital role in ours.”
With deliveries shipped in via Neal’s Yard Dairy, the good people of Helsinki are getting the likes of Cornish Kern, Stichelton, Isle of Mull Cheddar and Yoredale Wensleydale on their doorsteps, as Rolling Cheese flies the flag for Britain’s cheesemaking community.
Nelli says, “We’re constantly inspired by the cheesemakers behind these British cheeses — the courage and curiosity they bring to their craft. Many are reimagining historical recipes, blending deep tradition with a spirit of innovation. They’re also leading the way in sustainable practices, championing the welfare of animals and the land they farm. This dedication resonates far beyond the UK and continues to shape and inspire cheesemakers and mongers around the world — including us.”
With a focus on raw milk, farmhouse, and artisan cheeses from across Europe, and the “people behind the wheels” as Nelli says (love that!), shoppers can expect everything from classics to bold new wedges. “We believe that good cheese should be accessible, engaging, and full of character — but never intimidating. Our role is to listen, share, and celebrate what makes each cheese — and each person’s taste — unique.”
If you were looking for a cheesemonger’s oath, we think this would be a very good place to start.
